From an Athletes Perspective

What the Legion Track and Field Program has meant to me
By Sultana Frizell

My name is Sultana Frizell, and I'm a former provincial team member who was fortunate enough to participate at the National Track and Field Championships during the years 1999, 2000 and 2001.

I have been invited this morning to speak to you about what the Legion Track and Field Programs have meant to me, and how important these development programs are to the youth in our communities.

First, on behalf of all the young athletes, I wish to thank all the Legion Branches here today for your generous support, dedication and commitment to the track and field programs for the district level up to the national level.

I know a great deal of work, and time goes into organizing these meets and camps, and I wish to commend the efforts of Track and Field Officer Mr. Bruke from Branch 244, Chairman Mr. Rhude, and Mr Tucker of District G and all the volunteers, coaches, clinicians and officials who make these events such a success.

These sponsored Legion programs provide all youth an equal opportunity to participate and measure their athletic abilities with other athletes from across Canada.  For me it provided an opportunity to make new friendships fro coast to coast and left me with lifelong memories.

I believe that participating in sports helps young athletes develop the qualities that make future leaders and role models.

My experience with Legion programs, have been very rewarding on and off the field.  Last year and this year, I have been able to give back to my community, through coaching other aspiring athletes at my high school.  One of those athletes was able to medal last year at the National Track and Field Championships held in Sherbrooke  Attending the Legion Camps helped prepare me, to help others in reaching their goals and dreams.

I fell very privileged to have has the opportunity to compete at the Legion National Track and Field Championships for three consecutive years and it has been a great honour to have had a chance to represent my community, school and province.

In closing, I would like to congratulate all of the legion members for your devotion over the years to the youth in your communities, and personally to thank you for doing such an excellent job.
